Description of the Group:

The Health Promotion and Community Education Writing Group includes stroke professionals with a passion for and a focus on the patient, their families and the broader community relative to greater understanding of stroke risk factors, signs and symptoms.

Goals of the Group:

This Writing Group defined a dual aim for the project:

  1. Decrease the level of “missingness” in the capture of stroke symptom onset time
  2. Collection of information on the type, duration and audience of programs/PSAs that educate the public that stoke is an “emergency”

Our goals include:

  • Decrease the average time from stroke symptom onset to patient/family access of 911.
  • Increased public awareness on the importance of early stroke recognition, emphasizing the element of time (the urgency of knowing when symptoms began), activating 911 quickly, and accurately measuring time.

Current Project Overview:

The Health Promotion / Community Education group will develop a pilot to focus on the “missingness” of meaningful time measurements, while enhancing public “preparedness”.  Missingness will address the knowledge gap of time from symptom onset to first medical contact. We propose a systematic approach to data collection to increase the volume of times known in a consistent, measureable manner, utilizing existing frameworks and data measures. Preparedness will assess regional symptom recognition through existing communication/outreach venues.
